New England Winter Getaways: North, South, East and West from PIER 4

While the Ocean Homes at PIER 4 are an urban oasis unlike any other, sometimes a change of scenery or a little adventure is good for the soul. And even during the winter months, there are countless weekend getaways within a drive or short flight from The Seaport which can satisfy that wanderlust in us all:

  • The Great White North: If we’re talking winter in northern New England, then skiing and snowboarding are typically high on the list. We’re partial to Sunday River in Bethel, Maine which is celebrated for the best snowmaking in the region with its perfectly groomed trails. Don’t miss the mountain’s great après ski bars like the Matterhorn, and some top restaurants in the Town of Bethel, which Ski Magazine named one the top 10 ski resort towns in the country. For large groups looking to relax in the lap of luxury, check out the extravagant ski house rental “Ski Esta at Sunday River.”
  • Southern Comfort in Newport: The Rhode Island yachting capital may not seem like an obvious winter destination, but we think you’ll agree that snow only adds to the charm and beauty of this historic waterfront. The best part? The crowds are largely gone, leaving you free to explore at your own pace. We recommend the Cliffside Inn, a luxury bed and breakfast, as your home base. Housed inside a restored 1876 Victorian mansion, this B&B has earned an international reputation for excellence in the hospitality industry, and has won designation as New England’s most romantic inn. The deluxe amenities include whirlpool baths, fireplaces and imported linens. The Inn is just steps from the historic Cliff Walk, near quiet stretches of sand and sea, and a short walk to the restaurant and shopping districts.
  • Eastern Promises for Culture on the Cape: New England is a favorite among those with a love of antiquing, and Cape Cod is no exception. Visit The Antique Center of Cape Cod, a warehouse that houses contemporary pieces as well as craftwork from local artisans. Maps of Antiquity in Chatham is a unique shop that features more than 4,000 maps, some of which date back to the 1600s. While in Chatham, we recommend reservations for “Tea by the Sea” at the fabulous Chatham Bars Inn. For art lovers, Provincetown Art Association and Museum (PAAM) is a must with a stellar selection of exhibits, classes, and lectures.
  • The West is the Best: At least, we think so when you’re talking the Berkshires outpost of the internationally recognized spa Canyon Ranch. The all-inclusive resort is situated in the postcard-perfect community of Lenox in Western Massachusetts, just a little over two hours from PIER 4. Choose daily from refreshing spa, wellness and fitness activities. During the winter months, individual and group cross-country skiing lessons are available, conditions permitting. For winter hiking or snowshoeing, be sure to bring a warm hat, gloves and strong waterproof footwear.
